What is Islam?

Islam is a monotheistic faith centered on the belief in one God, known in Arabic as Allah. It is one of the world’s major religions, followed by over a billion people across diverse cultures and regions. The word “Islam” itself means “submission” or “peace through submission,” reflecting the idea of living in harmony with the will of God. Followers of Islam are called Muslims.

Core Beliefs

At the heart of Islam is the belief in one, unique, and incomparable God, who is merciful and just. Muslims believe in a long line of prophets sent to guide humanity, including Abraham, Moses, and Jesus, with Muhammad regarded as the final messenger. The holy book of Islam is the Qur’an, which Muslims believe to be the literal word of God as revealed to Muhammad.
